Tarleton State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award the bachelor's and master's degrees. Texas A&M University-Central Texas is a part of Tarleton State University and is currently seeking separate accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Texas A&M University-Central Texas became a stand-alone university on May 27, 2009 as a member of The Texas A&M University System. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges recognizes A&M-Central Texas as an entity of its parent university, Tarleton State University, until A&M-Central Texas is awarded separate accreditation. Therefore, transcripts will continue to read Tarleton State University and the diplomas will be inscribed with the names of both institutions, Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University-Central Texas, until such time as separate accreditation is designated.
