Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE)
Who has to take it?
How can I prepare for the WPE?
How is the WPE graded?
How do I schedule my exam?
How do I review my grade once I’ve taken the exam?
The Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) is a handwritten exam issued by TAMUCT to evaluate the ability of its students to think and write critically, a skill necessary for success in almost all professional fields. The Academic Support office is here to help you understand, schedule, and prepare for your WPE experience.
All students will need to take the WPE if they have not taken and passed two Writing Intensive (WI) Courses in order to graduate from TAMUCT. View the list of classes that are accepted as WI and when they were designated as such. Consult with your faculty adviser for any questions regarding your personal WPE requirements.
NOTE: The following students are required to complete the Writing Proficiency Examination, regardless of Writing Intensive courses taken:
| First Term of Enrollment at TAMUCT | Required to Complete Writing Proficiency Exam |

Sample Prompt
WPE Article
The article provided above was the actual article and a sample prompt from last semester's WPE. By looking at the prompt, you can see that the graders are less interested in your citing the article, and more interested in whether or not you can accurately and logically present your own opinion about the subject. If you would like assistance in preparing for the WPE, there will be a WPE workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd in the Nursing Building, from 5:30-6:30pm.
Two faculty or staff members qualified to analyze writing content and style grade the WPE. Graders for the WPE must be employees of TAMUCT, have a Master's degree, and have experience evaluating written assignments. Each grader will present a score of Pass or Fail in accordance with the Grading Criteria provided below. If both graders are not in agreement, then a third grader will be used to determine the final grade.
WPE Grading Criteria
The next Writing Proficiency Exam is scheduled for March 2nd, 2012 @ Noon. Register for the test online.
If you have any questions, contact the Academic Support office at (254) 519-5796, or email Ryan Thompson at rthomp8@ct.tamus.edu.
Grades will be available for viewing 3 weeks after the WPE. To see your grade, log into Student Self Service and follow the steps below. If, on your degree plan, it says "Yes" for the subject "Writing Proficiency Required," then you have successfully fulfilled that portion of your degree requirement. If you still see a "No," then you did not pass the exam and still need to satisfy that requirement.
